About Kyna
Kyna is a native Southerner born in Asheville, NC and raised in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia. Like everyone, her life has had its peaks and valleys. Her story includes valleys like a partially abusive childhood, divorced parents, losing both biological parents to cancer, infertility, and a lengthy elder care season.
Kyna's peaks include earning a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Richmond (1987) and an M.A. in Counseling from Regent University in Virginia Beach (1992), and later opening her own private practice in Middle TN in 1997. She also met her husband Rodney in graduate school and they married in 1993.
Kyna worked as an in-home advocate for a private hospital group and in two local Christian counseling agencies in the Tidewater, Virginia area. She gained her Virginia license (LPC ‘95) and National Certification (NCC ‘96) before moving to Nashville, and her Virginia LMFT in ‘98. Kyna worked in the private treatment center for seven years with her parting position being the first Director of a ground-breaking treatment foster care program. She received her LPC license in Tennessee in 1997, and obtained a license to practice in North Carolina in 2010.
After moving to Nashville, Kyna worked in a non-profit group home for women in crisis, followed by two community mental health centers. She led groups with at-risk kids in Metro schools and with chronically mentally ill adults and opened her own private practice in 1997. In 2000, she decided to focus solely on building her private practice.
Kyna has had numerous articles published on abuse, relationships, and parenting teenagers in several LifeWay publications. She was also an adjunct faculty member at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville. She twice served on the board of the local Nashville Area Association of Christian Counselors. Kyna developed and taught a court-approved parenting through divorce course for six years during her membership at a local Franklin, TN church. That course still runs to this date.
Kyna has an artist's soul. With a background in church music and leading worship, her love of music led to six years of writing and performing country music in Music City. She formed an ASCAP publishing company and was blessed to write with and befriend some great local singer/songwriters. More recently, Kyna serves in a leadership role with the Journey Arts Collective of Journey Church. Creativity has become a lifestyle and impacts her counseling style combining clinical, spiritual and coaching elements with every client.
In 2008, Kyna launched "Coach Kyna® " after completing a Certified Life Coach program. She writes and speaks in her role as Coach Kyna and is currently writing a book for artists that she will launch with an accompanying podcast.
Kyna and Rodney make their home in Thompson's Station, TN where, for now, the stars still light up the night sky. They also have a second residence in her family home in Asheville, North Carolina, where they often go to fish and explore God's awesome creation!
